Learning to be a web developer has been a little bit of a challenge. Sure I have to learn all the coding, formats, languages and lingo and etc but that is all part of the game. The challenge for me is in the hardware that I have. I do have a small netbook but it is basically a disaster. The Lemote Yeeloong is a good computer for DIY projects in computer engineering and blood pressure escalation but it is not (yet) a good production machine.

The only other "computer" that I have is a Chromebook. Yes, I understand about Google spying on me and how that I ought not use this piece of spyware but I don't have the money to spend on a new computer. I am just a poor boy. Add to that at the time I got the Chromebook I didn't want to spend the time to find an older computer from somewhere and spend hour upon hour trying to make the thing work for what I needed it to do. So I made a choice and sacrificed privacy and anonymity to "git 'er done."

Now for those that don't know a Chromebook is not a "real" computer. It is basically a internet interface device. Think of it as a big mobile phone without the phone part. My particular device has a 4GB processor and only 16GB of onboard memory. It is designed to be used online. While it will do somethings offline it is at it's best in an online environment.

Now back in the day when @Carolus Rex first allowed me to play around on his server I didn't even have a computer and a huge portion of the stuff I did on his server was actually done through either a mobile phone or a tablet. Doing this taught me a lot of things. It taught me firstly, that I can do more with a phone than most people can do with their fancy iCrap, and it taught me that if I set my mind to it I can do almost anything.

Fast forward a couple of years and now I am working to become a web developer and for the time being all that I really have to work with is this mid-to-low level Chromebook. How in the name of all that is holy am I going to be able to the job of a webdev without having a real computer?

While doing a Google search on how to do this I ran across an article where a guy setup his iPad with a full IDE. He did this so that he can work uninterrupted. I guess he had the iPad already setup in such a way that it would be distraction free.  But anyway he set up the IDE on the iPad and worked for a month uninterrupted. He says that his month of working only with the iPad was one of his most productive.

Well hell, I thoughts to myself, if he can set up an iPad then I should be able to setup a Chromebook. It wasn't really all that hard. I already had a text editor on this thing that works offline but I need more toys. I decided to go what geeks call "native." I am taking classes online to eventually work online to build the online world so why not do it all online. I have found ways of using all the usual geek toys online without installing them onto the Chromebook. These are things like Firefox, Emacs, Pidgin, Blender, etc etc. I even found a thing online called Cloud9 where I can have a full working Linux IDE in the cloud. I can use git through this. I haven't figured out how to SSH into a server yet but I don't have a server to SSH into so that is ok for now but I am confident that when the time comes that I'll be able to figure it out.

I am not sure why I am sharing this except to say that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Sure, it sounds cliche but it is cool when you finally figure out that it is truth.

@Beni Grind  I didn't say new. I said old used :-).

@Maria Karlsen I know. I just confirmed that I think that's the way to go. Sorry if I didn't express this clear enough... ;)

I used to spend a lot of time with old used machines. I have actually only bought one computer and two mobiles phones in all of my life. Everything else has been someone else's hand-me-downs.
